چکیده

Monitoring of global bio-geophysical processes and their changes, that are due to human activities and natural causes, is of vital importance for earth system research. Microwave remote sensing can play a very significant role in a scientific understanding of the entire earth system. Significant geophysical parameters of land surfaces such as soil moisture, vegetation biomass and snow cover, as well as their changes in time, can be estimated on the basis of microwave data and physical models. To date, most of the research on land has been carried out in relatively small areas, using data from highresolution sensors (SAR), while only a few studies have been conducted with low-resolution sensors on a global scale. Among these, the ESA/ERS Wind Scatterometer and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), that are mainly designed for sea surface observations, have significant interest also for land application.

Multi-spectral Analysis of the Amazon Basin using SeaWinds, ERS, Seasat Scatterometers, TRMM-PR amd SSM/I

The Amazon basin represents a vast geographical zone containing large proportion of global biomass. We use the SeaWinds scatterometer (QSCAT), ERS-1/-2 scatterometer (ESCAT), NASA scatterometer (NSCAT), Seasat scatterometer (SASS), Tropical Rain Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar (TRMMPR) and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) data to study the multi-spectral microwave response of Amazo...

Ecosystem Monitoring Development in the European Russian Tundra Based on Sar/ers Data

The possibility of application ERS-2 SAR for monitoring of Russian European tundra ecosystem components was investigated. The synergetic using of SAR with Landsat data can be widely used for investigation and mapping of tundra vegetation, soils, for the ecosystem monitoring of anthropogenic effects.

Surface soil moisture estimation over the AMMA Sahelian site in 3 Mali using ENVISAT / ASAR data

8 Abstract 9 This paper focuses on different methods for estimating soil moisture in a Sahelian environment by comparing ENVISAT/ASAR and ground data 10 at the same spatial scale. The analysis is restricted to Wide Swath data in order to take advantage of their high temporal repetitivity (about 3–4 days) 11 corresponding to a moderate spatial resolution (150 m). On the one hand, emphasis is put...

Seven Years of Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) Global Monitoring (GM) of Surface Soil Moisture over Africa

A surface soil moisture (SSM) product at a 1-km spatial resolution derived from the Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) Global Monitoring (GM) mode data was evaluated over the entire African continent using coarse spatial resolution SSM acquisitions from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) and the Noah land surface model from the Global La...

Soil moisture estimation from ERS/SAR data: toward an operational methodology

—Previous studies have shown the possibility of using European Remote Sensing/synthetic aperture radar (ERS/SAR) data to monitor surface soil moisture from space. The linear relationships between soil moisture and the SAR signal have been derived empirically and, thus, were a priori specific to the considered watershed. In order to overcome this limit, this study focused on two objectives. The ...
